Replacing coils and wicks in RDA’s

replacing coils and wicks

Replace or Maintain?

There is no given standard amount of time you should keep a single coil. Replacing coils all depends on how often you use your device. Generally, you can expect your coil to last you about 2 weeks. You can use your coil longer, but due to buildup on the coil, you will lose flavor and vapor production.

Have no fear! Changing a coil is easy, and only takes a few seconds.

If you’re looking to save money, you can reuse a replaceable coil, but be ready for some extra work. You can soak the coil in vodka for 30 minutes to an hour; this can break down the buildup on the coil. When finished soaking, let your coil dry out for 1-2 days or until completely dry.

Replacing coils & wicks in RDA’s

There are 4 factors to look for to know when it is time to replace your coils.

  1. Poor vapor production
  2. Burnt vape taste
  3. Lingering flavors of e-juice
  4. A gurgling sound

If you are experiencing any of these issues, then it may be time to replace your coil.

Replacing Coils

Replacing coils for an RDA can be a lot of work and quite frustrating sometimes, especially if you’re a vaper who is used to using premade coils or tanks with replaceable coil heads. The biggest benefit of using an RDA over a tank is saving money making your own coils.

First completely remove the RDA from the MOD, and remove everything from the RDA including the cotton and old coils. Wash out the RDA under warm water to remove any old juice or residue and pat dry with a cloth. When installing the new coils make sure that one end goes in the negative post and one end goes in the positive post.

If you’re not sure which post is which, you can refer to your RDA’s owners manual.

Make sure all the screws are tight and secure, any bad connections can cause your RDA to not work properly.  Line up the coils so they are horizontal & centered to the base of your RDA. ** Note that some builds and RDA’s use different setups. Fire your device to make sure its properly working and heating.

When you are done installing and tweaking the new coil, you can re-wick and vape.

Replacing Wicks

If you’re not happy with the flavor or vapor production of your atomizer, there could be an issue with your wick.  Check for burning, tight or loosen wicks.

For burnt wicks, start by removing the wick from your coil, and heat the coil until it turns red hot. Tap and hold the fire button on and off to heat the coil. Avoid holding the button down for long periods of time. This can cause damage to your mod and coil. When you’re finished removing any gunk or residue, you can reinstall the wick and vape.

On occasion, if you put too much cotton, a tight wick will prohibit the e-liquid from soaking up quickly enough, giving the user a dry hit. On the flip side, if your cotton is too loose, it will not come in full contact with the coil, causing dry spots and hits. Make sure to leave enough cotton on the ends so it reaches the bottom of the RDA and can soak up juice.

Benefits of Replacing Coils

To get the most satisfying experience from your device and juice, it is important to replace or clean your coils regularly. If done so every 2-3 weeks you will notice fewer problems.

One thing we can all agree on is that nothing is better than a fresh set of batteries and a new wick or coil. It’s like vaping in heaven.
